DANNEMORA — Raymond J. Shatraw, 82, died Sunday, May 19, 2013, at CVPH Medical Center surrounded by his loving family
Ray was born in Plattsburgh on Aug. 6, 1930, the son of Ovid and Gertrude (Bombard) Shatraw.
He married Jean LeClair at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora on June 17, 1950.
Ray served in the U.S. Marine Corps and USMC Reserves from 1948 to 1951 and was a member of the American Legion Post #1623 of Lyon Mountain.
Ray was a Corrections Officer for 35 years at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, retiring in 1988. He was known throughout the North Country as the leader of the "Knights", a band that played at many functions and clubs in the area for 22 years. He was also instrumental in starting the music program at Dannemora State Hospital. His love of music is well known, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean; five children, Kevin Shatraw and his wife Bonny of Plattsburgh, Keith Shatraw and his wife Nancy of Dannemora, Karen LeClair of Fulton, N.Y., Kenny Shatraw and his wife Rosemarie of Malone, and Kathy Shatraw of Barre, Vt.; seven grandchildren, Kevin Lee Shatraw, Bryan James Shatraw, Patrick Shatraw, Dana Marie Frusco, Adam Shatraw, Travis Shatraw, and his wife Emily, and Jacob Shatraw.
At Ray's request there will be no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 23, at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora.
