HAMPTON, VA./AU SABLE FORKS — Lawrence W. (Bill) Granish, 86, of Hampton, Va., formerly of Au Sable Forks, N.Y., passed away on Jan. 15th, 2014 after a brief hospitalization at the Hampton Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Bill was born June 28, 1927 in Syracuse, N.Y. to the late Edward and Mabel Arney Granish. He was raised in Clintonville, N.Y. where he lived until graduating from high school and enlisting in the military.
He retired from the Air Force with 23 years after which he worked for many years at Whiteface Mtn. Ski Center, Wilmington, N.Y. He also worked for 22 years as a volunteer for the Au Sable Forks Volunteer Ambulance Squad. After moving to Hampton, he volunteered with the Veterans Administration at Hampton for 8 years (more than 1400 hours), more recently spending Wednesday mornings on the Spinal Cord Injury Unit. For many years, he was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Southmayd Granish; his brothers, Robert and Edward Granish; and sisters, Anne and Mary Alice Boprey.
He is survived by sons, Lawrence Jr. and wife Nancy of Olympia, Wash., Wayne and wife Barbara of Saranac Lake; and daughter, Debbie Muire and husband Al of Hampton, Va.; four grandchildren, Scott, Samantha, Danielle Fitzgerald and Kristian; and one great-granddaughter, Hadley Maeve Fitzgerald. He is also survived by sisters, Jean Boprey Coolidge of Keene Valley, N.Y., Kathleen Boprey Howard of Keeseville, N.Y.; and brother, Gerald Boprey of Clintonville, N.Y.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014 at the Thwaits Zaumetzer Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2014 at the funeral Home. Burial will be in the spring in Fairview Cemetery in Au Sable Forks.
