PLATTSBURGH — Mrs. Jane C. Arena, 81, of Hillcrest Avenue in Plattsburgh, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Meadowbrook Healthcare Facility with family by her side. She was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Plattsburgh, the daughter of the late George and Catherine (Cook) Weatherwax. She was a graduate of Plattsburgh High School and attended Plattsburgh State University College.
Jane and her late husband, Salvatore Arena, owned and operated Domenic's Restaurant in Plattsburgh for 45 years until her retirement.
Jane's biggest recreation was bowling. She was vice president of Plattsburgh Women's Bowling Association for several years. Jane was active in getting the 1970 and 1976 New York State Women's Bowling Tournaments to Plattsburgh.^ She bowled in 40 state tournaments and 30 national tournaments. She was president of the Polaris League for many years, and traveled to many state and national bowling tournaments. She also enjoyed playing bingo, traveling, and was a member of St. Peter's Church.
Jane is survived by a son, Kevin "Skip" O'Hara of Plattsburgh; a stepson, Domenic "Butch" Arena of Providence, R.I .; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorraine Glode of North Carolina, Pauline and Arnold Petty Provost of West Chazy, and Pearl Weatherwax of Plattsburgh; a sister-in-law, Grace Masse of Syracuse; her grandchildren, Nathan O'Hara of Plattsburgh, and Nikki Burdo and her husband Kyle Burdo of Plattsburgh; her stepgrandchildren, Jason, Christine, and Marissa; four great-grandchildren, Sydney, Sophie, and Halle Burdo, and Emma O'Hara; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Noah and Lodan; a son-in-law, Robert Belcher of Florida; several nieces, nephews, and her canine companion, Dunito.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Catherine Weatherwax; her husband, Salvatore "Sal" Arena; a daughter, Carlene Belcher; and brothers, Carl "Buddy," Dennis, Edward, William "Billy," and Thomas.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, at Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at St. Peter's Church. Entombment will follow at Whispering Maples Mausoleum in Plattsburgh.
