MERRILL — Karin L. Vann, 59, formerly of Merrill, N.Y., entered the Kingdom of our Lord Dec. 20, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, while at her home in Haines City, Fla., under the care of hospice. She was born August 17, 1954, to Maryann Raponi Vann and Arthur Vann, both who have predeceased her.
After 29 years of service, Karin retired as a Lieutenant from N.Y.S. Dept. of Corrections at Upstate Correctional Facility, Malone. She began her career at Clinton Correctional Facility, where she received the Medal of Honor, and went up through the ranks, becoming a Sergeant at Arthur Kill Correctional Facility.
Karin had an unconditional love for animals, especially her dogs, whom she called her "family." She adopted and rescued many throughout the years. She was an avid boater and motorcyclist. She adored nature and the outdoors. Her passion was her guitars and music. Her Martin was her favorite and she loved playing and singing.
She is survived by her soulmate, Michelle Caserto of Florida; three sisters and one brother; Terry Oot and husband Patrick, Kathleen Oot-Quinn and husband Thomas, Leah Oot and husband Matthew, and Christian Oot, all of the Syracuse area. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, as well as her beloved dogs.
A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, May 9, at St. Joseph's Parish, Dannemora. Following the funeral service, dinner and a celebration of her life will be held at the American Legion in Redford. A graveside service will be held privately in Baldwinsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Karin's memory would be appreciated by the Humane Society, 134 Idaho Avenue, Plattsburgh, NY 12903, as she herself always donated to save the animals.
