Press-Republican

---- — NORTH BANGOR — Paul R. Davis, 61, of North Bangor, died at home surrounded by family Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013. Born Nov. 25, 1951, in Malone, he was the son of Robert J. Davis and Irene Aldrich (Davis) Strausbaugh.

He graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone in 1969 and Paul Smith's College in 1971. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he attended both Machinist and Nuclear Power School. He served as a Machinist Mate on both the U.S.S. Wasp and U.S.S. Newman K Perry and was honorably discharged as a Second Class Petty Officer in 1977, receiving a National Defense Medal for his service.

Paul put his mechanical experience to good use working as a drill rig operator for both Atlantic Testing Laboratories and Lucy Well Drilling from 1976 until 2011, when his cancer would no longer allow him to work.

Paul stayed busy with his many hobbies that included woodworking, leatherworking. gardening, boatbuilding, and working on outboard motors. He enjoyed his woodworking more than anything; as was evident in the many wood toys, furniture, boats, and assorted trinkets he produced with the skill of a master craftsman. He was also a Past Master of the Free and Accepted Masons North Star Lodge 107F and AM of Brushton and the American Legion Post in Norwood.

Perhaps more than any other hobby, Paul enjoyed hunting and fishing at his beloved camp on the Jordan Club, of which he was both a past president and trustee. He was always at peace in the woods or in the boat and loved telling stories about his many experiences of getting a deer or catching fish. He was known as a gentle and caring man who enjoyed helping others, oftentimes sacrificing his own free time to assist someone at camp with a project, or giving away one of his masterpieces created in his wood shop. He made friends wherever he went and was well-respected by all.

Paul is survived by his wife of 14 years, Dixie Loucks Davis; mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Irene) Strausbaugh; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick (Amanda) Davis; son, Christopher Davis; granddaughters, Evelyn Davis and Meghan Davis; aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. G. Berton Davis; and a wife from a previous marriage, Regina Hawkins Davis.

He is predeceased by his father, Robert J. Davis; a sister, Joyce Davis; and an uncle, Carl Aldrich.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Country in Malone, NY. Arrangements are through the Spaulding Funeral Home of Malone.
