Augustine (Gus) LaPlante

PIERCEFIELD — Augustine (Gus) LaPlante, 98, of Tupper Lake passed away, Saturday, April 27th, at Mercy Living Center following a brief illness with his family by his side.

Gus was born on June 12, 1914 in Piercefield, N.Y., the son of Eugene and Mary ( Desjardin) LaPlante. He grew up in Piercefield where he lived an exciting life.

He was very proud of his time spent with the CCC which enabled him to purchase one of the first cars in Piercefield. This allowed Gus to become somewhat of an entrepreneur by delivering groceries to camps and many other innovative ways to earn money. On April 15, 1931, he married the former Theresa Syple. Gus worked for Revere Copper & Brass in Rome, N.Y. After his retirement, he moved to Childwold, N.Y. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, snowmobiling, hunting and gardening. Gus's favorite pastime was fishing on the Racquette River in Childwold.

Gus was pre-deceased by his wife, Theresa; sisters, Netta Dumas, Papst (Reata) Wiecorek, Margarite Fountain, Marie Jenne LaPlante; brothers, Romeo, Armand, Alcide (Peanut), Earnest, Lairy and Tomas (Bean); daughter, Diane Keys; sons, Ronald, Eugene and Gary; and loving companion Helen Shultz.

He is survived by sons, Philip of Mt. Arab and Craig of South Colton; 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. A friends and family gathering will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 11th at the Thirsty Moose in Childwold.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Piercefield Volunteer Fire Dept. Online condolences may be made at www.stuartfortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
