Myrtle S. Mero

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Myrtle S. Mero of Clearview Oaks, St. Petersburg passed away peacefully on Feb. 6, 2013 having never recovered from an auto accident in Oct. 2012.

She was born August 25, 1921, in Strackville, N.Y., The eldest child of Shirley Esmund and Alma Velita Strack (Nee Bell) and also the eldest grandchild of George and Delima Bell (Nee Lafountain). She attended Sallaz Academy in Redford, N.Y. and, after the family moved to Beekmantown, N.Y., St. John's Academy in Plattsburgh, N.Y., graduating in 1937. She was the last surviving member of that class. After attending Loretta Business School and working briefly in Plattsburgh she moved to Washington, D.C., where she spent the rest of her working life, retiring in 1987 as a Security Specialist with the Department of Defense.

She was very active in the Toastmistressess Club in D.C., where she met her lifelong friend Alice Phillips of St. Petersburgh. She was also an active member for years with Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. In Clearview Oaks she was an officer of the Social Club and Editor of their Chronicle for many years. She was a communicant of the Church of the Transfiguration of St. Petersburg.

She was predeceased by her former husband Walton J. Mero of Willsboro, N.Y., (a veteran of the Iwo Jima campaign); and their two children, Shirley Ann (Lee) Crippen and David Jay Mero; two brothers, Raymond Strack and Clarence Strack.

She is survived by two daughters-in-law, Linda Mero of Encino, Calif., and Rosario Mereaux of Shula Vista, Calif.; a son in-law, Dan Crippen of Bethesda, Md.; two grandsons, Kevin Mero of Encino, Calif., and Ryan Mero of Lake Balboa, Calif.: two great-grandchildren; two sisters in-law, Joyce Strack of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Edith Strack of Findlay, Ohio; a sister, Madelyn Bushey of Elmira, N.Y.; a brother, Alvin Strack and his wife Margaret of Naples, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Final arrangements were by Williams & Sons of St. Petersburg, Fla.
