Clayton V. "Red" Galarneau

KEESEVILLE — Clayton V. "Red" Galarneau, 90, of Grove Street, died Saturday, August 17, 2013, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of the North Country. He was born Jan. 11, 1923, in Keeseville, the son of Arthur and Laura (Shappy) Galarneau.

Red served with the United States Army Special Operations Unit during WWII. He worked for General Electric, owned and operated TV and Appliance Sales and Service in Keeseville, and lastly served as a journeyman electrician with the IBEW, retiring after the 1980 Olympics. In later years, he made many pieces of hardwood furniture and cabinets for his home, family, and friends.

Red was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had a passion for lake trout fishing, and on May 15, 1975, he caught a record lake trout on Taylor Pond, weighing in at 37 lbs. 4 oz., and 38 in length. He was very active with sportsman organizations. He championed the rights of sportsman, member of the Plattsburgh Rod and Gun Club, Lake Champlain Basin Committee, member and past-president of the Adirondack Federation of Fish and Game Clubs, and he worked for many years at the Clinton County Conservation building at the fair grounds.

Survivors include his three children, Laurie and Doug Rule of Crittenden, Ky., Gerald and Martha Galarneau of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gary and Karen Galarneau of Keeseville; grandchildren, Lynn Galarneau, Kristen Burgess, Shannon Galarneau, and Tyler Rule; great-grandchildren, Aislynn and Matthew Burgess; and niece, Barbara Alloggio.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Elizabeth "Betty' (Baldwin) Galarneau; and sister, Catherine Twa.

There will be no public calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 21, at St. John's Church in Keeseville, with Rev. William G. Reamer, pastor of OLVA and CVPH Chaplain, celebrating. Committal prayers, military honors, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A gathering will follow with details to be announced at the Mass.
