Walter F. DeMane

COLORADO — Walter F. DeMane died peacefully in Colorado surrounded by family on Aug. 14, 2013, at the age of 85.

Born in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of Paul and Anna DeMane and raised in Cortland, he graduated from Clarkson University and served in the Army during the Korean War.

Walt was the owner of the Overhead Door Company of Plattsburgh and Massena, and was active in Rotary, St John's School, and Beartown Ski Area. He was one of the original Beartown Swap Shop volunteers and also enjoyed many years serving as Ski Patrol and tending gates at local ski races. Walt and his wife Pat were married for 61 years and raised six children in Plattsburgh N.Y. In retirement, he and Pat split their time between Gulf Harbour in Ft. Myers, Fla. and Gull Point on Upper Saranac Lake, N.Y. Walt was a dedicated volunteer for Habitat for Humanity during his years in Florida. An avid and accomplished golfer and skier, Walt was additionally a talented carpenter and enjoyed engineering anything with his family and friends on Gull Point. He had a special fondness for antique wooden boats and spent his final days touring Upper Saranac in his "woody" with anyone who wanted a ride.

In addition to his wife Pat, he is survived by his children and grandchildren; Mark and Kathy DeMane of Golden, Colo., Stephen and Carol DeMane (Christine, Whitney) of Englewood, Colo., Michael and Catherine DeMane (Annie, Emma, Laura, Sarah) of Deephaven, Minn., Scott and Wendy DeMane (Stephanie, Amy) of Plattsburgh, Deidre and Eric Ellis (Ian, Colin) of Englewood, Colo. and Capt. Peter and Kate DeMane (Erin, Courtney, Claire) of Norfolk, Va. and Brussels, Belgium.

A private family gathering is planned in Colorado, and at his specific request, a party will be held next summer on Gull Point to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Upper Saranac Lake Foundation (usfoundation.net) a non-profit organization that seeks to preserve, enhance and protect the natural beauty, environmental quality and recreational enjoyment of Upper Saranac Lake.
