MORRISONVILLE — Bernard J. Whalen, 84, of Route 3, died on Friday, April 12, 2013, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.
He was born in Ellenburg, N.Y. on March 9, 1929, the son of Patrick and Malena (Trombly) Whalen.
Bernard married the former Beulah Trombley on April 24, 1954, in St. Edmund's Church in Ellenburg. He had worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Ellenburg Highway Department when his dad was Highway Superintendant. Bernard operated a family dairy farm in Ellenburg and also worked as a heavy equipment operator at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base for over 29 years until its closure.
Bernard was a true Irishman at heart and nothing brought him more joy than being with his family. He loved to attend and support his grandchildren at all of their special events. Bernard was an avid New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed traveling with his family and spending time gardening.
Bernard was a 3rd Degree/4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus which he was a member of for over 50 years, and a communicant of St. Alexander's Church. Bernard served on the Board of Directors at the Chateaugay Co-op for many years. He had been appointed to the New York State Agricultural Committee by Governor Carey, and was a member of the Town of Plattsburgh Democratic Committee.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Beulah Whalen of Morrisonville; four children, Bernie Whalen and his wife Kathy of Plattsburgh, Donna Whalen-Matkoski of Plattsburgh, Brenda Whalen-Wood and her husband Bill of Chateaugay, and Randy Whalen and his wife Cathy of Plattsburgh; ten grandchildren, Melissa, Barrie, and Corrie Whalen, Matthew and Brynn Matkoski, Mallory, Marci, and Meaghan Wood, and Ryan and Brendan Whalen; three great-grandchildren, Madyson, Easton, and Bailey Whalen; two brothers, Richard Whalen and his wife Mary Dale of Plattsburgh, and Walter Whalen and his wife Frances of Brainardsville; one sister, Jane Barber of Dannemora; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Whalen of Plattsburgh, Molly Whalen of Dannemora, and Kay Whalen of Merrill; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
