John S. Mischenko

MINEVILLE — John S. Mischenko, 87, of 22 Republic St., died Thursday, April 11, 2013 at the Horace Nye Home in Elizabethtown, N.Y.

He was born Feb. 2, 1926, in Mineville, N.Y., the son of John S. Mischenko and Amelia Zabrowska, husband of the late Mary Evelyn (Varmette) Mischenko.

John S. Mischenko, "Chief", as he was better known, was a lifelong resident of the Mineville/Witherbee area. He was a veteran of World War II, who was very active in civic and patriotic groups. John was a Past Commander of the Post 5802, Mineville Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served with the 76 Division of the Battle of the Buldge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

John was employed at Republic Steel Corp., and later for the International Paper Mill - Ticonderoga Mill.

He is survived by his sons, Rev. Martin T. Mischenko and wife Deborah C. Mischenko of Mineville and Thomas Mischenko of Oswego, N.Y.; grandchildren Susan (Mischenko) Ramirez, and husband Fernando Ramirez of Hudson Falls, N.Y., Jeni (Mischenko) Gonyea and husband Matthew Gonyea of Glens Falls, N.Y., Amanda Mischenko of Hudson Falls, Matthew Mischenko of Queensbury, N.Y., and John Mischenko and wife Cassandra (BalI) Mischenko of Queensbury; great-grandchildren, Tate Morris. Fernando Ramirez Jr., Logan, and Wyatt Gonyea, and Riley Mischenko; and former daughter-in-law and friend whom stayed in touch throughout the years, Roberta Davis of Glen Falls.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday at Harland's Funeral Home in Port Henry, N.Y. A Mass of a Christian burial will be held at l0 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Peter and Paul's Church in Mineville. Memorial donations may be made to the Mineville/Witherbee Fire Department.
