Babette B. Rogers

TICONDEROGA — Babette B. Rogers, 91, of Ticonderoga, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Heritage Commons Residential Healthcare of Ticonderoga.

She was born in Manhattan, New York City, the daughter of the late J. Horace and Therese (Kutner) Block.

Babette leaves her loving husband, Michael, whom she married in 1964. She is survived by her two sons, Stephen K. Urice of Miami Beach, Fla. and John K. Urice and his wife, Penny Kolloff of Eau Claire, Wis.

Her education included Dalton School, where she was class president and founder of the Alumni Society. She graduated from Vassar College with honors. Her post-graduate work was at Columbia University where she majored in social psychology and was an associate to Dr. Goodwin Watson.

After moving to Delaware, Babette became Director of Delaware State Adult Education. She said one of the most challenging high points of her career was teaching exceptional sixth graders. She was a life member of the National Education Association, and a charter member of the National Association of Social Workers. As Executive Secretary, she was head of the Delaware YWCA.

Babette enjoyed playing tournament bridge, especially with her husband, and was active in the American Contract Bridge League. She achieved Life Master in 1969 and became a Gold Life Master in 2003. She was past president and treasurer of the New York Adirondack Bridge Unit, and District Board Member for Eastern New York and North New Jersey. She served several terms as District representative to the ACBL Board of Governors. In recognition of her bridge contributions, she was appointed to the ACBL National Charity Committee and National Goodwill Committee.

Babette was Delaware Chairman of the Church Women United, and represented Delaware on the National USO Committee. Since the 1930's she was a member of the Silver Bay Association. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach, Fla. and to the Ticonderoga Kiwanis.

Memorial arrangements will be announced at a later date. She will be buried in the Rogers family plot at Valley View Cemetery, Ticonderoga, N.Y.

The family welcomes memorial donations to the Babette Block Rogers Scholarship Fund at Wilmington Friends School, 101 School Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19803.

Arrangements are by Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin Street, P.O. Box 543, Ticonderoga, NY 12883.
