PERU — Michael David Sunderland, 56, of Morningside Heights, Manhattan, died April 11, 2013 at his home, after battling lung cancer.
He was born in Malone, May 9, 1956, the son of Vincent and Nancy (Walters) Sunderland.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Han; his son, Matthew; and daughter, Annalia; mother, Nancy of Peru; and brother, Kurt and his wife Margaret Edwards of Rome.
He was predeceased by his father, Vincent; and his sister, Diana.
Michael graduated from Peru Central School in 1974. He attended St. Lawrence University. He took time to work on the Alaskan Pipeline for three years. He earned a BA with a major in geology from SUNY Plattsburgh. Michael did graduate studies at New Mexico Tech, where he met his wife, Annie Han. He was awarded a MS in Education from Teachers College Columbia University. Michael taught for many years in New York City at the public high schools and colleges.
He was a devoted son, brother, husband and father. He was an avid reader and a world explorer with his family. Michael enjoyed studying geology, astronomy, politics, and literature. Michael made life interesting for everyone who knew him.
A memorial service was held in New York City, April 16, 2013. A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
