ELIZABETHTOWN — Richard N. Fleury, 76, of Elizabethtown, N.Y., died Sunday, July 21, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital. He was born, Jan. 15, 1937, in Elizabethtown, the son of Russell and Clementine (Smith) Fleury.
He graduated from Elizabethtown High School and worked for the Grand Union for most of his life. He served in the Army from 1960 to 1962. Richard was a star athlete in high school and an avid hunter and golfer. Golf was his favorite pastime and he looked forward to playing as soon as the weather permitted. Rich was often seen on his golf cart driving around town. He was a member of the Elizabethtown Fire Co. for 49 years , joining in 1964, and served as Asst. Captain and Captain from 1967 to 1971; 2nd Asst. Chief and 1 Asst. Chief, from 1971 to 1974 and 1978 to1979 and later Fire Police. He also served as Fire District Commissioner for several years.
Richard married Helen Brankman in 1974. Helen, his parents and his sister Marguerite died earlier. He is survived by his loving companion of many years, Julie Lewis. He is also survived by two sisters, Kathy and her husband David Cadena, Linda Hyde; and several nieces and nephews.
Richard was never afraid to let you know exactly how he felt about a situation. His laughter and spirit will be truly missed.
A graveside service will be held Friday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth's Cemetery in Elizabethtown. Memorial donations may be made to the Elizabethtown Volunteer Fire Co. Marvins Funeral Home has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
