Elizabeth M. Parnell

Plattsburgh — Mrs. Elizabeth M. Parnell, 97, formerly of Somers, N.Y. and Port Orange, Fla., passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh with family by her side. She was born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on Jan. 14, 1916, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Putprush.

She graduated from Pittston School of Nursing and completed extensive course work at Columbia University. She married Wesley Parnell Feb. 21, 1943 and continued working as a Registered Nurse during World War II as her husband fought with the U.S. Army in the Normandy Invasion.

Elizabeth was employed as a Registered Nurse for many years at New York Medical Center at Grasslands and later at Northern Westchester Hospital, Mount Kisco, NY., as the Instructor of Nursing. When retired, she was an original member of Our Lady of Hope Church in Port Orange, Fla. She was an active volunteer at the Port Orange Library where she created and donated over 3000 decorative library card holders. She enjoyed what she called the three Bs: bowling, bridge and BINGO.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Thomas Loughan of Plattsburgh; a grandson, Timothy Loughan of Plattsburgh, and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Wesley Parnell, passed away in 1974. She was also predeceased by her siblings, Marion Rowlands, John Putprush, Catherine Putprush, and Jean Zielinski.

In accordance with Elizabeth's wishes, there will be no calling hours. Services and interment will be held at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be offered to the Elizabeth Parnell Memorial Fund c/o Meadowbrook Healthcare, 154 Prospect Ave., Plattsburgh, NY, 12901. The purpose of the fund will be to assist the Meadowbrook Nurses and Aides in their continuing education.

The family wishes to thank the many staff members at Meadowbrook Healthcare for their kind and loving care. The family would also like to thank Dr. Phillips and Dr. Pabst who showed much care and compassion.
