PERU — Ralph K. Arthur, 82, of Fuller Road, died Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the Elizabethtown Community Hospital. He was born Sept. 14, 1931, in Peru, the son of Ralph M. and Marie R. (Covel) Arthur.
Ralph graduated from Keeseville High School in 1949. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1955.
He married the former Betty Lou Tyrell, the love of his life, in 1957. She predeceased him Aug. 20, 2008.
Ralph enjoyed family gatherings and music; playing the organ, piano, accordion, and harmonica. He also enjoyed being a member of the Peru Community Church choir for nearly sixty years, gardening, woodworking, and working on Republican party committees.
Ralph received an elementary teaching and a master's degree from Plattsburgh State University. He taught for one year in Peru (sixth grade); then accepted a political position in Albany in 1960, working on legislative reapportionment, setting up assembly and senate congressional districts. Later, he taught fifth grade in East Nassau/ New Lebanon school district for eleven years. He also worked various jobs, including painting houses, performing odd jobs for individuals, as well as for Apple Valley Senior Housing and supervised apple pickers at a local orchard for many years during the fall season.
He is survived by five sisters, Lois (Milton) Wrisley of Sebastian, Fla., Hilda (George) Curtis, Linda Arthur, and Joan Lange, all of Peru, and Thelma Lyon of Keeseville; many nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous cousins.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Cora LaBounty; and brothers, Charles, Edwin and Willis Arthur.
Relatives and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Peru Community Church with Rev. Dr. Robert E. Svenson, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be private in the Harkness Cemetery.
