PLATTSBURGH — Dr. Ira A. "Buss" Rowlson Jr., (also affectionately called "Dad", "Grampy" and "Hawk"), 92, late of the Victoria House, died Thursday, June 13, 2013.
Born in Plattsburgh on Nov. 16, 1920, he was the son of the late Ira A. Rowlson Sr. and Elizabeth Marshall Rowlson. He married Jane Prescott on Aug. 8, 1943, at her home in Keeseville, N.Y.
Buss graduated from Plattsburgh High School, attended Tufts University, and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from McGill University in Montreal in 1945. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves during WWII and the Korean Conflict, stationed two times at the dental clinic at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Ira eventually reached the rank of Commander. He practiced family dentistry at various locations in Plattsburgh until his retirement in 1986.
Buss was very involved in his community, serving on the City of Plattsburgh Board of Education, the board of the Plattsburgh YMCA, the board of directors at Ausable Chasm, and as a trustee of the Riverside Cemetery Association. Ira was a member of the NYS Forth Dental District, the Plattsburgh Optimists Club, and the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge 621.
Buss was known as an ardent supporter of youth sports, both at PHS, which his children attended, as well as St. Regis Falls Central School, where his granddaughters participated in sports. He is still referred to as "Grampy" by a whole generation of athletes there.
Besides his parents, Buss was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jane, and his sisters Marjorie (Sis), Dorothy, and Katie.
Buss is survived by his three sons and daughter, Alan (Elva) Rowlson of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Chris (Mickey) Rowlson of Collierville, Tenn; and Romeyn of Springfield, Va.; and his daughter, Rebecca (Ernest) Witkowski of St. Regis Falls, N.Y. He was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, Jason Rowlson, Brooke Witkowski, Kasia Witkowski, Nathaniel Rowlson and Margaret Page Rowlson. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Calling hours are scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 16, at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m on Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Plattsburgh. Friends wishing to remember Buss may make memorial contributions to the Jane Prescott Rowlson Endowment Fund at PUC, or the East Beekmantown Cemetery.
