Margaret Veronica (Shambo) MacDougal

ESSEX — Margaret Veronica (Shambo) MacDougal, 89, died Oct. 10, 2013, at the CVPH Medical Center, Plattsburgh, N.Y. She had been a resident of Meadowbrook Health Care since suffering a debilitating stroke in February of 2010.

Margaret was born in Willsboro, N.Y., April 21, 1924, the daughter of Howard and Elizabeth (Murphy) Shambo.

She graduated from Willsboro High School and attended Champlain Valley School of Nursing. She married Harold Q. MacDougal, Sept. 25, 1948. She was a communicant of St Philip-St Joseph Parish, a Eucharistic Minister and a Pastoral Minister to the sick and dying. For many years, Margaret nursed sick and dying neighbors and friends in the Essex-Willsboro area.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cary and Jim Friday of North Chili, N.Y., six sons, Kevin and Peggy MacDougal of Mount Holly, Vt., Michael MacDougal of Essex, Tim and Sharon MacDougal of Middlegrove, N.Y., Francis MacDougal of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Fred MacDougal of Willsboro, Harold and Leta MacDougal of Whallonsburg, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, two brothers, Robert and Jann Shambo of Plattsburgh, Donald and Joyce Shambo of Lake Katrine, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Joan MacDougal of Willsboro; brother-in-law, Robert and Mary Rennell of Port Kent, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her husband, Harold; one granddaughter, Ashley MacDougal; two sisters Mary Batten and Ann Rosse; and two brothers, John and Kenneth Shambo.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and aides at CVPH for their compassion, caring and wonderful care not only for Margaret, but also for our family at this most difficult time. We also wish to thank Dr. Lacki, Dr. Phillips and the nurses and aides at Meadowbrook for their loving care while she was a resident there.

Margaret was a totally unselfish, loving, caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Her passing leaves a huge hole in the lives of those who loved her.
