Daniel Joseph Downs

PLATTSBURGH — Daniel Joseph Downs, 90, of Plattsburgh, died June 17, 2013 with his loving family by his side. He was born on Burnt Hill near Saranac on June 15, 1923, the son of Hubert and Dora (Clancy) Downs. Dan was raised on Burnt Hill, and lived and worked in the area. He married Marion Macey on April 29, 1946, and lived on Burnt Hill until they built a home in Keeseville in 1960.

Dan opened a chainsaw, lawnmower and snowmobile sales and repair shop in Keeseville in 1956. In 1970, he started a home construction company, building a large subdivision of homes on Macey Lane in Plattsburgh and numerous homes throughout the North Country. He retired in 1986 and moved to Plattsburgh. Dan and Marion enjoyed camping in the summer, supper on Friday nights with a special group of friends and dancing every weekend all year long. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes. Dan had a clever and mischievous sense of humor, and was especially skilled at playing jokes and invoking fun-loving teasing on his family members and favorite friends. He traveled numerous times to visit his sons in Alaska, Vermont and Colorado, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, flying and sightseeing while in Alaska. He enjoyed numerous trips around the country and cruises in the Caribbean. A trip to Ireland in 2000 to visit the country of his ancestors was a highlight.

During the past few years, Dan became a master at using Skype to video-converse with his sons and grandchildren all across the country. He was a past officer of Moose Lodge 2390 in Plattsburgh, a lifetime member of the Elks Club BPOE 2072 in Keeseville, and a member of the Newman Center.

Dan is survived by his wife Marion of 67 years and his four sons, Bob and Judy Downs of Sterling, Alaska, Dennis and Kelly Downs of Sterling, Alaska; Tim and Mary Downs of Fairfax, Vt.; Dan Downs and Gail Denton of Boulder, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brothers Hubert, Dennis, Robert, James and John. More recently, Dan loved having an adopted fifth son and daughter-in-law from China, Mr. and Mrs. Wei Qiu and their daughter Katie.
