ESSEX — Harry A. "Puss" LaPine Jr., 78, of NYS Route 22, Essex, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home.
He was born in Essex, April 4, 1935, the son of Harry Sr., and Margreet (Lawrence) LaPine.
He grew up in Essex and graduated from Willsboro Central School in 1952. After high school he worked for Champlain Forest Industries. In 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1959. When he returned from the service, he began a career with NYCO in Willsboro that spanned 30 years prior to retiring. Following retirement, he worked the Essex-Willsboro transfer station in Essex.
"Puss" as he was fondly referred to, was active in the community and served as an Essex Town Assessor, a member of the Board of Assessment Review, and a member of the Essex Town Council. He was also a member of the Keeseville Elks Lodge #2072.
He was an avid sports enthusiast. He especially enjoyed watching baseball and was a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was also known for his artistic ability as a welder. Welding a variety of different decorative pieces.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Claire S. (Sayward) LaPine, who he married June 23, 1956, in Willsboro; son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Mary Ellen LaPine of Fairfax, Vt.; two grandchildren, Craig and Michelle LaPine, both of Fairfax, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Milton Sonny and Charlotte LaPine; and sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Alfred Lee.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 29, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, at the Essex Community Church with Rev. John E. Hunn, Pastor, officiating. Committal prayers, military honors, and burial will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery in Willsboro.
