George E. Fennessy

NEWCOMB - George Earl Fennessy, 87, met his Lord and Savior Tuesday morning Jan. 21, 2014, at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Newcomb, the son of the late James and Myrtle LaPrarie Fennessy.

George was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne B. Stringer; and his brothers, Lowell and James Fennessy.

George enlisted in the US Navy Oct. 18, 1944. He received the American Theatre of War medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He served aboard the USS Webster and The USS Bataan. He was honorably discharged May 6, 1946, as a Seaman First Class.

He was a member of the American Legion for 66 years, and a member of Local 106 Operating Engineers, Albany, N.Y., for 36 years. He retired in 1988.

George proudly served as a Newcomb Town Councilman for 20 years. He was influential in the Newcomb landfill closure, saving Camp Santanoni, additions to the Town Hall, acquisition of the Newcomb Historical Society Building, construction and operation of the Newcomb Golf Course, improvements to the Newcomb Health Center and participated in several other issues.

George loved life. His passions in life were fishing, hunting, trapping and rabbit hunting with his beagles. He enjoyed being a member of the Kempshall Mountain Club and smoking trout and venison.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Anderson Fennessy; and his daughter, Lana Fennessy, both of Newcomb; and his two nieces and five nephews.

George requested that there be no viewing hours or funeral service. A graveside service will be held at St. Therese Cemetery at a date to be announced in the spring. The family requests that memorials for George take the form of donations to Newcomb Rescue Squad, Newcomb, NY 12852.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home, Schroon Lake.
