---- — PERU — Gertrude S. Adams, 87, of Peru, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013 at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington, Vt. She was born in Ellenburg, June 26, 1925, to Merle and Frances (Arno) Sweet.

She graduated from Chateaugay High School in 1944 and then joined the Cadet Nurse Corps at Plattsburgh State College. She graduated in 1947 with a registered nurses license. In 1950, she returned to Plattsburgh State College and received a B.S. degree as a school nurse teacher.

She was employed at Alice Hyde Hospital from 1947 to 1949. Gertrude then became a member of the Chateaugay Central School family as a school nurse teacher from 1951 to 1963. In 1968, she joined the Peru Central School faculty, also as a school nurse teacher and retired in 1984.

She was married in 1946 to Gerald LePage. They had two children, Linda and Jay. Gerald died tragically in 1949 at the age of 23, as a result of an automobile accident.

In 1954, she married Robert J. Adams of Chateaugay. They had a daughter, Sharon. Robert and Gertrude were married 47 years until Roberts death in 2001.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed golf, bowling, swimming, and dancing. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and quilting. She made each of her grandchildren beautiful quilts. Gertrude also enjoyed oil painting and displayed her works. Gertrude was a communicant of St. Augustines Parish Peru, NY since 1963.

As mentioned, she was predeceased by her husband Gerald LePage on Nov. 16, 1949 and her husband, Robert Adams on June 18, 2001. She was also predeceased by her grandson and godson, Michael LePage on Nov. 27, 2005 and her brother, Alfred Sweet on Sep. 2, 2011

She is survived by her loving children and their spouses, Linda and James Orsborn of Billerica, Mass., Jay and Angeline LePage of Peru, N.Y., and Sharon and Lawrence Jennings of Virginia Beach. She had eleven grandchildren, Jonathan (Susan) Orsborn, Sara Anzuoni, Robin (David) Pieri, David LePage, Nicole (Joseph) Bodenrader, Katherine (Nate) LePage, Christopher (Amanda) LePage, Michael LePage (deceased), Melissa (Christopher) Howse, Jamie( Jeffrey) Church and Ashley (Nicholas) Brenckle. She is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren. She is survived by four sisters, Myrtle (Owen) Murray, Beatrice O'Neil, Mercedes (Robert) Light, Judith (Hank) Nelson; and two brothers, Reginald Sweet and Lee (Louise) Sweet; and a sister-in-law, Janet LePage Kasold. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Gertrudes family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to her many caring neighborhood friends. They also offer a special thank you to the staff at Fletcher Allen Hospital for their compassionate, skilled and remarkable care during the last week of her life.

Gertrude will be remembered for her kindness, perseverance and profound unconditional love. Since being widowed in 2001, she was resolute in her determination to remain fiercely independent. It was a testament to her fortitude that she was successful.

There will be no public calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at St. Augustines Church in Peru. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
