Eugene "Gene" Alteri Sr.

TICONDEROGA — Eugene "Gene" Alteri Sr., 88, of Ticonderoga, passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013. at Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Ticonderoga, Dec. 27, 1924, he was the son of the late Michael A. and Bertha V. (Baker) Alteri. He was a lifetime Ticonderoga resident.

At the age of 16, Gene worked on the D & H Railroad. At the age of 19, he began his career of more than 40 years with International Paper Company of Ticonderoga. He started as a boiler operator and then quickly advanced to the woodyard, before becoming a crane operator. He spent most of his career as a crane operator, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the company's Quarter Century Club.

Gene was predeceased by his wife, Lucille A. Alteri, on May 17, 2012. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Reed Alteri; and by one brother, John F. Alteri.

Survivors include his six children, Roger E. Alteri of Tennessee, Eugene Alteri Jr. of Ticonderoga, Cherlyn E. Flanagan of Massachusetts, Lori A. Alteri of Ticonderoga, Karen M. Alteri of Ticonderoga and Diana L. Alteri Clark of Ticonderoga; and three sisters, Leona Badke, Alberta Sharkey and Antoinette Mott, all of Ticonderoga. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call from 4 - 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ticonderoga, with Rev. Kevin D. McEwan, Pastor, officiating. The Rite of Committal will follow at the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga. Donations in Mr. Alteri's memory may be made to the Ticonderoga Emergency Squad or Ticonderoga Fire Department.
