Dorothy Elizabeth Madden

JAY — Dorothy Elizabeth Madden (nee Andrews) was born August 16, 1932 in Goshen, Orange County, N.Y. to the late Dorothy M. and Albert W. Andrews.

At age 9, Dorothy and her family moved to Washington, DC where she attended local schools and graduated cum laude from Georgetown University School of Nursing in 1954. While on vacation to the Adirondacks in 1957, Dorothy met Joseph T. Madden of Jay, N.Y. They were married May 13, 1958 and have lived in Jay since that time. Dorothy worked as a nurse in Lake Placid and Keene Valley hospitals, sold real estate for BA Straight, worked in the family owned Madden's Country store, and was Director of Public Health for Essex County. She and her nursing team were recognized by the State of NY for their successful efforts in childhood immunizations. Dorothy was elected as a Democrat to the Town of Jay council, served on the board for Catholic Charities, was a lector at Holy Name Church in Au sable Forks, served on the Au sable Library board, the Holy Name School board, and Friends of the North County.

Dorothy's beloved husband, Joseph, died Monday, Sept. 23. As in life, Dorothy made sure Joseph was all taken care of before she quickly followed him on Saturday, Sept. 28.

She is survived by four children, Mary Ellen Walker of Jay, Eileen Hebert of Clinton, Mass., Ann Marie Madden (Charles Kemper companion) of Burlington, Vt., and James Madden (Tammy) of Jay. She leaves behind five grandsons, Anthony, Nicholas, Alexander, Vincent Walker, JJ Madden; one granddaughter, Molly Kate Hebert; and three great-grandsons, Connor, Felix, and Raylan. She has a brother, L. Gregory Andrews (Elana) of Fairfax City, Va.; a sister, Barbara Flynn (Dennis) of Edgewater, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was a very loving lady, was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She enjoyed reading, baking, quilting and thoroughly enjoyed her life in Jay. Dorothy supported local charities by donating quilts or by providing baked goods. Dorothy was a steadfast Catholic and loved interacting with people. She will be deeply missed by all.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at Holy Name Church in Au sable Forks followed by the burial at St. Agnes cemetery in Lake Placid.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Holy Name Church or the charity of your choice.

The Thwaits-Zaumetzer Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
