PLATTSBURGH — Patrick F. Akey, 56, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, after losing his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Pat was born Nov. 20, 1956, in Alexandria, La., to Franklyn and Lucie Akey. He was a graduate of St. John's Academy and attended Plattsburgh State University.
Pat married the love of his life, Diane Teixeira, on Nov. 25, 1978, in Staatsburg, N.Y. He had a passion for the hospitality business. He chose to employ people of all ages and abilities. His entrepreneurialism started at a young age with his PFA Skateboard Shop, continuing on to C & C Grinders Sub Shop, Bonanza Restaurant, Syd's Liquidation Center, and later, Soeurs Grises Condo Development in Montreal. However, he is best remembered for his greater visions of Ponderosa Steakhouse, Putters Miniature Golf and Go-Karts, Hampton Inn & Suites, Microtel Inn & Suites, and Uno Chicago Grill in Plattsburgh. In 2011, Pat received the North Country Chamber of Commerce Joe Bornstein Award for Business Person of the Year.
Outside of work, Pat had a wide range of interests including his love of skiing, bicycling, fine food and wine, Formula One racing, Plattsburgh State Men's Basketball, Montreal Canadiens Hockey, vacationing with his family, and enjoying the Florida sunshine. Pat considered Montreal his home away from home with an adopted family of Canadian friends and his favorite restaurants and entertainment. Pat was proud of his role on the American Red Cross board as well as his membership with the Elks Club in Plattsburgh. He was a long-standing supporter of the North Country Girl Scouts Council. Pat will be remembered for his love of children, his value of hard work and integrity, and his passion for entertaining friends. He was a great conversationalist and was known as a mentor and source of inspiration. He loved working hard to provide for his three most important people.
Pat is survived by his mother, Lucie Akey; wife, Diane; son Pat; daughter, Kristie; siblings, Angela Nephew, Joe and Karen Akey, Debbie Akey and Kevin Petrashune, Raymond and Jennifer Akey. Nieces and nephews include Chris, Joe, Frank, Jacob, Isabel, Leah, and Cora.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Brown Funeral Home. The funeral is at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, at Saint Peter's Church, Plattsburgh.
