---- — PLATTSBURGH — Dr. John L. Rury, Jr., 88, of Massachusetts Avenue, Plattsburgh, N.Y. passed away on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born in Baldwinsville, N.Y. on April 4, 1925, the son of John and Jane (Noble) Rury, Sr.

John graduated from Baldwinsville High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Army Infantry serving his country during World War II.

After being honorably discharged he went on to Upstate Medical School at Syracuse University graduating in 1953. He came to Plattsburgh in the 1960's as an Anesthesiologist at Champlain Valley Hospital and Physicians Hospital, later CVPH Medical Center, retiring in 1999. John enjoyed his retirement, especially exercising every day. He could be seen frequently early in the morning jogging up and down Tom Miller Road and swimming at the YMCA and Wellness Center in Plattsburgh. John also picked up golf later in life and enjoyed playing at Bluff Point Golf Resort. He and his wife took many trips all over the world. John was a member of the Plattsburgh Elks Lodge and lifelong Yankee Fan.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Richard Rury; a sister, Mary Rury; and a son, Frederick Rury.

John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Doris (Manor) Rury of Plattsburgh; eight children, John III, Kim, Cynthia, Joyce, Suzan, Elizabeth, Michael and Rebecca; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive him.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 26, 2013 at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 at St. Peter's Church in Plattsburgh; entombment will follow at Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens on the Tom Miller Road in Plattsburgh.

In lieu of flowers donations in John's memory may be made to the Foundation of CVPH Medical Center.
