Charles Owen Doe

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Charles O. Doe died suddenly in early September at his home in Washington D.C. where he had lived for many years. Born in 1936, he was the son of Charles Henry Doe and Jane Bishop Doe.

Chuck was raised in Dannemora, graduating from Dannemora High School in 1953. He was awarded a full scholarship to Cornell University, from which he graduated, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1957. He joined the U.S. Government as an intelligence analyst and operations officer, serving in that capacity for eight years, including four years in Laos and Vietnam. He subsequently embarked on a career in journalism. He wrote for The Philadelphia Bulletin, The Associated Press, Newsweek, The Chicago Tribune, Radio Free Europe, and The Army, Navy, and Air Force Times. He was also the founding editor of "Focus on Germany," the newsletter of the German American Business Association. During this period he resided, at various times, in London, Munich, Belgrade, and back in Vietnam. A gifted linguist, Chuck was fluent in French, German, and Russian.

Concurrent with the above, Chuck enjoyed a career in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as a Colonel. In this capacity he was the founding commander of The U.S. Army Reserve Linguist Unit.

Mr. Doe was an enthusiastic student of Shakespeare, and enjoyed entertaining his family with recitations of speeches, soliloquies, and dialogue from numerous plays.

He is survived by three brothers, Grant T. Doe (Nancy) of Arlington, Va., William V. Doe (Joanne) of Rocklin, Calif., and Gerald B. Daoust (Sarai) of Ottawa, Ontario, along with numerous nephews and nieces.
