James J. Young

PERU — James J. Young, 68, of Blueberry Road, Peru died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of the North Country.

He was born in Brooklyn, June 20, 1942, the son of Donald and Olive (Lowe) Young.

After completing his degree at Plattsburgh State, James joined the staff of the Bedford Public Schools in Westchester County, N.Y. He served as an elementary- and middle-school teacher and elementary-school principal for more than 34 years. He was recruited to serve as a principal, a position he held for 12 years.

Mindful of his responsibility to give back to society and especially people in need, James always found ways to contribute. Upon his retirement, he became involved locally with many housing renovations, building handicapped ramps and just helping people out. He joined Champlain Valley Habitat for Humanity and served as construction manager and volunteer trainer/supervisor for their first builds.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Janet (Mueller) Young, whom he married June 13, 1964, in Yorktown Heights; two sons, Jason Young of Watervliet and James Adam Young and his wife, Joanna of Olathe, Kansas; sister, Maureen McMurtry, and her husband, Donald of Peru; parents-in-law, Edward and Agnes Mueller of Southbury, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and brother, Donald Young.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice of the North Country, 358 Tom Miller Road, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. To light an online candle and offer condolences in the memory of James Young, please visit
