Barbara Lichtig

PLATTSBURGH — Mrs. Barbara Lichtig, 77, formerly of Plattsburgh, and most recently Shelburne, Vt., died peacefully Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at her home in Shelburne.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on March 14, 1936, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Rae (Shefsky) Barish.

Barbara graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn, and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brooklyn College and her Masters of Science in Education from Hunter College. She was a Special Education teacher at Monty Street School until her retirement.

She was a member and former President of Temple Beth Israel and was also very involved in their sisterhood. She served as the first President of the Pine Harbour Residents Council. She was a co-founder of the Parkinson's Support Group in Plattsburgh, and was an active member of Reach for Recovery and Treasure Chests. During her life in Plattsburgh, she was very active in various organizations, charities and foundations. Barbara loved travelling, shopping, Bridge, Mahjong, going to the casino, and of course chocolate.

She is survived by a son Jeffrey Lichtig and his wife Lori of Nyack, N.Y.; two daughters, Terri Goodwin and her husband Russell of South Burlington, Vt., Karen King and her husband James of Minneapolis, Minn.; a granddaughter, Robin Goodwin; three grandsons, Aaron, Max and Tiger King; a brother, Miles Barish; a niece, Stacey Bakutes; and a nephew Bruce Barish.

Her husband, Melvin Lichtig, whom she married June 17, 1956, at Laurelton, Long Island, died on January 9, 2008.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 28, at Temple Beth Israel, corner of Bowman and Marcy Lanes, Plattsburgh, N.Y. Burial will follow at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to Temple Beth Israel or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
