AU SABLE FORKS - Delbert Edward Savage, 83, died April 5, 2014, at Horace Nye Nursing Home in Elizabethtown, NY from complications related to Alzheimers disease. He was born in Au Sable Forks, N.Y., on August 20, 1931, son of Delbert Sr. and Anna (Dennett) Savage.
Like his father, Del was a talented artist, using his skills to support his family as a sign painter and designer. He married Lynn Braun in 1954 and in 1962, moved his family to the Glens Falls area where he took a job with Signs of Progress, eventually becoming shop foreman. He frequently did side jobs and after a while struck out on his own, becoming totally self-employed.
He returned to Au Sable Forks after retirement, and then moved to Churubusco after the death of his mother Anna. He resided at Horace Nye Nursing Home from 2007 until his death. Del enjoyed camping, fishing and family get-togethers.
Del is survived by his five children, Greg Savage of Fort Edward, N.Y.; Michelle Sandell of Gresham, Ore.; Brian Savage of Morrisonville, N.Y.; Pamela Harrington of Fort Ann, N.Y.; and Suzanne Tyler of Beaverton, Ore. He is also survived by his aunt, Alberta Gray of Au Sable Forks; his brother, Paul Savage, of Au Sable Forks; niece, Melissa Manning; nephew, Paul Savage Jr., both of Jay; a nephew, Benjamin Savage; plus 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two great-nieces and three great- nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, at Thwaits-Zaumetzer Funeral Home, 3 College Street, Au Sable Forks. Delberts funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 12, at Holy Name Church, 10 Church Lane, Au Sable Forks, NY, 12912. Interment at Holy Name Cemetery in Au Sable Forks will follow at a later date.
