Wayne Earle Deswert

March 28, 1929 - April 2, 2014

WESTPORT — Wayne Earle Deswert was born in Trenton, N.J. to Ruth and Ferdinand Deswert on March 28, 1929.

He was the oldest of three boys, leaving behind brothers Francis and Roger Deswert. Wayne joined the Army at the age of 17 (he fibbed about his age!), earning the rank of Sergeant. His grandchildren always thought the war ended because the enemy heard "Papa was on his way to Japan!" He met his beloved wife, Doris Mary Ramsey in the eighth grade and the two were married on Dec. 11, 1948, at the age of 19.

Wayne and Doris were married for over 65 blessed years. They raised and devoted their lives to their two children, Wayne Edward Deswert and Jayne Marie Deswert. They had six grandchildren, Heather, Paige and the late Keven Jr., children of daughter Jayne and Erica, Wayne Eric and Stephanie, children of Wayne Edward and Wendy Deswert and seven great-grandchildren, Blake, Madelyn, Braden and Bryce Liberi, children of Heather and Andrew Liberi, Wayne Ethan and Xavier, children of Wayne Eric Deswert and Ava and Ella, children of Erica and Brian Ruggley.

After selling used cars for a short time, Wayne worked for The Travelers Insurance Company until retirement, earning the highest of standards as a successful manager of numerous branches of The Travelers on the east coast. Wayne and his wife came to the North Country as new camp owners in Willsboro before purchasing The Victorian Lady Bed & Breakfast in 1992. Wayne joined the Westport Chamber in 1994. Wayne and Doris subsequently purchased The Westport Hotel & Tavern and The Lakeside Motel .

Wayne survived quadruple bypass surgery and cancer with the loving assistance of his wife and has cared for Doris for the past four years with the same compassion, patience and love that she showed him during his time of need. They returned to Westport, after retiring in Florida, to be close to their daughter and granddaughter, Heather, in 2012, due to Doris' illness.
