Stephen Pell Dechame

TICONDEROGA — Stephen Pell Dechame died suddenly at his family home, Le Petite Pavillion, Ticonderoga, N.Y., on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013.

He was born Dec. 18, 1947, at Moses-Ludington Hospital, Ticonderoga, N.Y. The beloved son of Stephanie Pell and Roger Dechame, Stephen shared his parents lifelong love, and devotion to Fort Ticonderoga. Through his parents, Stephen was a direct descendent of the Lords of the Manor of Pelhham, N.Y., and Stephen H.P. and Sarah G. T. Pell, who began the reconstruction of Fort Ticonderoga in 1908.

He attended Ticonderoga Public Schools, The North Country School, Lake Placid N.Y., The Pomfret School in Pomfret, Conn., Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio and the New England School of Law, Boston, Mass.

Stephen's life was dedicated to the fulfillment of Social Justice. In addition to his service to Fort Ticonderoga, Stephen gave his life completely to his clients in the Massachusettes Juvenile Justice System where he served as a Juvenile Defender, Guardian Ad Liten, and advocate for reform. His efforts touched and benefited uncounted lives.

While Stephen would never accept praise or allow himself to be distinguished for his work as a Public Defender and Advocate, he was particularly proud to be a Trustee of Fort Ticonderoga, a position he maintained throughout his life through July, 2013. With a passion of all aspects of Fort Ticonderogas vast and diverse history, Stephen took particular interest in the arrival of Samuel de Champlain in July 1609. Stephen's devotion to his Mother, Stephanie Pell Dechame, especially in her later years, was an inspiration to all who knew them.

Stephen is survived by his devoted brother, Robert Pell Dechame of Charleston, S.C.; his beloved cousins, William Hudson, and Sarah Hudson Krueger; his God-children, Mimi Krueger Rozek, and Christopher Krueger. He is also survived by his aunts, the Countess Mary Elizabeth de Lyrot, Alexandra Pell Kuhel; and his uncles, Frederick H. Allen and Anthony Pell; nieces, nephews and cousins. He is remembered by special friends, James O'Neil, Pope Simmons, and Frederick, Thomas and Audrey Provoncha.

Private Services will take place at the convenience of the family.

Contributions to his memory may be made to the Fort Ticonderoga Association, P.O. Box 390, Ticonderoga, NY, 12883.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home of Ticonderoga, N.Y.
