Joan E. Fleury

PLATTSBURGH — Joan E. Fleury, 84, of South Catherine Street, Plattsburgh, N.Y. died on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was born in Mineville, N.Y. on Oct. 20, 1928, the daughter of John and Mildred (LaGoy) Roach.

Joan graduated from Mineville High School in 1946. She met, courted and married James Lincoln Fleury of Westport, N.Y. in 1948 and began her long life of motherhood and support for her nine children.

Joan and family moved to Plattsburgh where she worked as a florist and flower arranger (Variety, Nelson's, Jeff's), church organist, choir director, and musician (Our Lady of Victory 22 years, St John's 10 years) and as a long-time Avon representative. Joan's passion for music extended as a founding member of the local Sweet Adelines Champlain Valley Chorus, including serving as Vice President and Assistant Director for several years. She also assisted the Cumberland Bay Barbershoppers in various roles for many years. Joan's passion for piano and organ continued as she served the Plattsburgh Kiwanis organization as pianist for many years, where she later became the first female member in the late 1980's (past-President and Kiwanian of the Year 1993).

With the loss of her daughter, Karen to a DWI driver in 1982, Joan became a dynamic local figure, driving and organizing the creation of the Karen Fleury Memorial Bicycle Path at Cumberland Head. She became a force in public service as Clinton County MADD Coordinator and Stop DWI (Citizen of the Year 1994). She influenced hundreds of people through her caring, empathy and honesty while conducting dozens of Victim Impact Panels and DWI Awareness speaking engagements at public high schools in Clinton, Essex, and Franklin counties.^

Joan managed to juggle her busy work life and public service while remaining the matriarch of her large, loving family. If her husband Jim was the strength and pillar, Joan was the foundation and roots of the family tree. Despite the occasional illusion of being pint-sized and frail, she was a force with whom to be reckoned! She was simultaneous leader, guide, friend, teacher, nurse, confidant, and above all, mother, providing wisdom, nurturing, morality, faith, friendship, humor, and love. Joan enjoyed music, singing, swimming, crafts, photography, gardening, and debate!
