Rosalyn Farmer Degon

LOTTSBURG, VA. — Rosalyn Farmer Degon, 91, went home to the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease and pancreatic cancer. She passed away peacefully at her daughter's home in Lottsburg, surrounded by her daughter, Patricia; son-in-law, Charles, and beloved caregiver, Taneika.

Rosalyn was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Watertown, N.Y., the daughter of Francis and Alice Farmer. She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Malone; and, in 1943, went on to earn her bachelor's degree of registered nursing from Hepburn Medical Center, in Ogdensburg. She married Earl Degon on April 13, 1946, in Malone. They soon moved to Tahawus and eventually Newcomb, N.Y., in the Adirondack Mountains. She loved her life with friends in Newcomb and was very active in St. Therese Church.

Rosalyn's first love was caring for people in her loving way, which was why she chose nursing as her professional career; however, she also explored other opportunities and discovered that a love of books and reading led to an unexpected venture. For many years, she was the librarian at Newcomb Central High School and Olmsteadvllle High School. Former students still send notes and cards to tell her of the impact she made in their lives as she taught them to respect the knowledge found in books. Her final career opportunity before retirement allowed her many years as activities director at Adirondack Nursing Home. She enjoyed bringing smiles to the faces of the many patients; improving their quality of life each day.

Rosalyn was predeceased by her husband, Earl; daughter, Dale Ann; parents and stepmother; her two sisters, Emily and Theresa; and two brothers, Vincent and Eldon.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Charles Piscopo; brother-in-law, Lloyd Richey of Malone; many nieces and nephews; four special grandchildren; and one great-grandaughter. She also leaves behind many adopted children; and friends who attest to her loving and nurturing nature. Rosalyn loved her family, and her cats, and enjoyed every day spent with them.

A celebration of Rosalyn's life and passing to a better place will take place during 3 p.m. Mass, March 21, at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 413 St. Timothy Lane, Tappahannock, VA, 22560, (804) 443-2760.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Please pray for Rosalyn and her family.
