WEST CHAZY — Leon R. LaForest, 82, of Route 22, went home to be with his Lord Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at his home, with his loving wife at his side. He was born July 10, 1931, in Champlain, the son of Henry and Laura (Baker) LaForest.
Leon married his first wife, Theresa Hall, in April of 1950. She was taken home to the Lord in 1992. He then married the former Marie-Claire Chartier Jan. 30, 1993, at the home of his daughter.
Leon worked as an auto mechanic for several area Chevrolet Auto dealers, drove bus for the Plattsburgh Transit Company for nine years, later owned and operated his own garage on Bridge Street for six years and then worked for Plattsburgh State University for 15 years, retiring in 1978. Leon was a volunteer for the RSVP Program, Hospice, and he also ran a registered adult home.
Survivors include his wife, Marie-Claire LaForest of West Chazy; eight children, Cecile and Richard Flora of Cadyville, Shelly Gainer and her fianc^ Larry Dame of Syracuse, Trudy and Raymond Murtagh of Plattsburgh, Michael Armstrong and his companion Mae of Montreal, John and Linda Armstrong of Missouri, Rose and Larry Paola of Chazy, James and Lynn Armstrong of Champlain, and Mark Armstrong of Beekmantown; his loving canine companion, "Buddy"; two brothers, Bernard and Billie LaForest of Mineola, Texas, and Vernon and Jean LaForest of Schoharie; one sister, Marilyn and Robert Warnock of Marcellus; three sisters-in-law, Rita LaForest of Plattsburgh, Venus LaForest of Cadyville, and Carol LaForest of West Berne; 16 grandchildren, Holly Flora Roe and her companion Ben Reyell, Adam Murtagh and his wife Katie, David Murtagh and his wife Charity, Brian Murtagh, Joseph Murtagh, Shawna Armstrong and her companion Shawn Parrott, Megan Bourgeois and her husband Ethan, Joshua Pearo, Zachary Pearo, Brendan Ryan, Corey Ryan, Ryan Armstrong, Robbie Armstrong, Brittany Armstrong, Cierra Armstrong, and Alexandra Armstrong; 12 great-grandchildren, Theresa Flora, Shelby Roe, Jesse Miller, Cheyenne Roe, Alec Miller, Chance Roe, Conner Murtagh, Kylie Murtagh, Micah Murtagh, Aurora Murtagh, Seraphina Pearo, and Richard Bourgeois; one great-great grandchild, Addison Chase; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four sisters, Doris Tallman, Ella LaFountain, Sylvia LaForest and Harriet Smart; five brothers, Adrian LaForest, Clarence LaForest, Clifford LaForest, Milton LaForest, and Melvin LaForest; and two grandchildren, Amy Flora and Vernon Roe.
Leon was a kind and loving fatherly influence as well as a true and faithful friend to so many. His warm smile and demeanor drew people to him. His sacrificial, generous spirit and unconditional love made him a true treasure in all our lives.
Calling hours were held Friday, Feb. 7, at R.W. Walker Funeral Home, 69 Court Street, Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, Feb. 8, at First Assembly of God Church in Plattsburgh. Burial will be in the spring at St. James Minor Cemetery in Cadyville.
