LAKE PLACID — Henry Karl, 83, of Lake Placid, N.Y., died peacefully at his home, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014.
Mr. Karl was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Geiselhoering, Germany, the son of Alois and Krescentc (Lermer) Karl.
Henry moved from Germany to New York City in 1956 where he worked as a butcher until 1972. In 1972, he moved to Lake Placid where he was owner and operator of the IGA store on Mill Hill until his retirement in 2006.
Henry loved woodworking, sawing lumber on his saw mill, He enjoyed his afternoon coffee group at McDonald's restaurant, and he had a special place in his heart for the family dog. Henry had said he was the first member of his family to reach 80 years old.
He is survived by his wife Ingrid (Strauss) Karl, of Lake Placid; four sons, Andre Karl and his companion Peggy Mousaw of Lake Placid, Brian Grant and his wife April, Michael Grant and Shawn Grant and his wife Jennifer, all of Potsdam, N.Y. He is also survived by one brother, Hans Karl of Denville, N.J.; one sister, Rosie Huber of Germany; and five grandchildren, Trevor, Christina, Rachel, Ashley and Schuyler. Henry was predeceased by his daughter Anita in 2004; two brothers, Alois and Ludwig; and one sister, Frieda.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 23, at the M. B. Clark, Inc. Funeral Home, 2310 Saranac Ave., Lake Placid. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, at Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Saranac Ave., Lake Placid with Father John Yonkovig officiating. Burial will follow in North Elba Cemetery.
