PLATTSBURGH — Shirley Irene Spiegel Lapham, 91, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014 at Meadowbrook Healthcare.
She was born on Oct. 31, 1922 to Sidney J. and Harriet Garrant Spiegel in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Gale M. Lapham Carroll and her husband James of Plattsburgh; by her son, William D. Lapham and his wife Victoria of Fla.; by grandchildren, Kelley Carroll Carlsen and her husband Brian of Va.; Kristen Lapham McCarthy Baker, Brian Lapham, Barbara Lapham Jacobs, and Scott Lapham all of Ala. and Shawn Hughes currently working and living in Saudi Arabia. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews including Jacqueline "Tete" Spiegel Huru, Donne Spiegel, Arthur "Sonny" Spiegel, Staub Spiegel, Schuyler "Ski" Spiegel, Michael Lapham, Paula Lapham, Kathleen Lapham Maksimow, Ann Lapham Barnes, Stephen Lapham, Susan Dewey, Meg Dewey Rowland, Jan Dewey Sharp, Carolyn Lapham Luke and Donna Lapham Wilson; and many grand nieces and nephews and cousins including Roy Garrant and his wife Carol. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Helen Lorraine "Rusty" Russell Lapham and Margaret "Peg" Neverett Spiegel; and by a brother-in-law, Robert D. "Bub" or "Gus" Lapham and his wife Joyce.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Edward J. Lapham in 1983; by her son, Edward J. "Joe" Lapham Jr. in 2011; also by two brothers, Sidney J. (and wife Marie) Spiegel, and Stanley G. Spiegel; and a sister, Sylvia Spiegel (and husband George) Ragatz. She is also preceded in death by a brother-in law, Francis A. "Gus" Lapham; and by sisters-in-law, Catherine (and Robert) Dewey and Dorothy (and Arnold) Filion; and by nephews, Sidney B. "Pappy" Spiegel, Greg Filion and Freddy Ragatz.
Her biggest joy in recent years came when her granddaughter, Kelley, would visit with her husband, Brian, and their children, Jack and Kate. They always made Great-Grandma Shirley smile. She was also thrilled with visits from her son, Willie, his wife, Vickey, and their granddaughter, Aryanna.
