CHAMPLAIN — Margaret Elizabeth Hartigan, 92, died peacefully Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at CVPH in Plattsburgh. Margaret was born on May 26, 1921, in Beekmantown, N.Y., the daughter of Leland and Josephine (Martin) Fresn. As a young child, she moved to South Hero, Vt., with her family, where she grew up.
Margaret graduated from Mount St. Mary's Academy in Burlington, attended nursing school in Burlington, and then graduated from Albany Business College in Albany.
She married Earl Hartigan in 1947 and they made their home in South Burlington. She was predeceased by Earl; her son, Bruce; and her sister, Mary Fresn.
She was employed at UVM Otolaryngology for three years and then at Timber Lane Allergy & Asthma Associates for many years as office manager. After retiring, she and her husband spent winters at their home in Fort Myers, Fla., and summers at their cottage in South Hero. She happily lived the last nine years with her son, Michael, in Champlain. She enjoyed fishing, reading, and painting.
Margaret is survived by her sons, David Hartigan of New Port Richey, Fla., and Michael Hartigan of Champlain; her daughter, Susan Tomat and husband Ralph Tomat of St. Albans, Vt.; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in South Hero, Vt. There will be no visiting hours.
