Guy George Wescott Jr.

LAKE PLACID - Guy George Wescott Jr., 91, died at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, N.Y. on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, surrounded by family.

Born in Lake Placid on March 17, 1922, to Guy and Alta (Taylor) Wescott, Guy lived in his hometown for the next 91 years. Guy had five sisters and two brothers. As a part of the greatest generation, Guy served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II.

Guy was married to Ruth Elizabeth Roe on Oct. 22, 1949, in Lake Placid where they shared the next 64 years raising their family and working and serving the community.

Guy learned the steamfitter and plumbing trade from his father. Guy worked at Tougher Industries of Albany for more than thirty years.

After the 1980 Winter Olympics he went to work for the Olympic Authority Aug. 11, 1983. He worked there until August of 2013. Olympic Authority personnel have said that he is one of the special few who truly understood the intricacies in his industry. Then in 2008 Guy was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame for his contributions to the 1980 Winter Olympics and to the young people of Lake Placid. He will best be remembered for his love of his family. Guy will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.

In 1962 he became a member of the Lake Placid Pee Wee Athletic Association, serving as president in 1966-67 and again in 1981. Guy was a member of the US Amateur Hockey Association serving as its vice president. He went on to chair the Lake Placid Junior Hockey Team and was instrumental in forming the Romeo Proulx Midget Hockey Tournament, as well as being an administrator of the Silver Stick Tournament, which consisted of both Canadian and Lake Placid Pee Wee and Bantam teams. Guy served on the hockey committee of the 1970 NCAA Final Four Hockey Championship and as a member of the FISU Games hockey committee, as the tournament liaison to the Soviet national team also, he was the co-chair of the off ice officials for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
