Albert Hassler

EUGENE, ORE. — Al Hassler died peacefully in his sleep May 1 at the age of 86 from a series of strokes.

Al had a good life. He left high school at 15 to try to join the Navy during the second world war. He was caught twice trying to lie about his age but was able to enter the Navy on his seventeenth birthday. After service as a gunner on a bomber in the Pacific, he went on to serve in the Navy for another 20 years.

Upon retiring from the Navy, he earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree and worked towards a Ph.D. He worked as the Assistant Dean of Humanities at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. He played and refereed hockey into his seventies. One of the highlights of his life was that he was a hockey goal judge at the 1980 winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He was able to see the USA hockey team win the gold medal in hockey for the first time in twenty years.

After retiring, he worked in sales, as a fly-tying instructor and as a fishing guide for Orvis. He played tennis until he was over eighty. He eventually moved to Eugene, Ore., to be near his daughter.

Albert is survived by his daughter, Allison of Eugene; his son, Al Hassler of San Antonio, Texas; his granddaughters, Meeghan Marlow of Malone, N.Y., and Lorena Smith of Dallas, Texas; his grandson, Chad Baker of Plattsburgh; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hope Loschman of North Carolina, Barbara Glover of Vermont and Holly Leech of Florida. He was predeceased by his wife, Amelia; and his daughter, Kimberlee.

Albert was a life-time member of both the Sierra Club and Trout Unlimited. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to one of these organizations. A service will be held later in Plattsburgh.
