Raymond E. Demar

ESSEX — When Raymond E. Demar, died on May 13, 2013, he was in his 84th year of a full and productive life.

He was the youngest son and fifth of six children born to Rose English and George Demar on June 27th, 1928, in Essex, N.Y. He experienced the struggles and challenges of the Great Depression era and was responsible for contributing to the family at an early age. After turning 18, Raymond enlisted in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Corporal. He was stationed in post-World War II Germany, in the city of Frankfurt, from 1947-1950. Upon his return, he courted and married Dorothy Connors and created a family of eight children. Throughout their 62 years together, Raymond continued to do whatever he could to provide for his family. In the beginning, he was employed at a small lumber yard between Essex and Bouquet. He had a knack for the process and found himself overseeing the drying building or kiln. The lumber yard eventually closed and he worked a short time for a hardware store in Willsboro. His longest employment came with International Paper in Ticonderoga. He retired in 1992, after 27 years, but retiring from the mill did not mean retiring from work. Over the years he has painted, repaired, mowed, trimmed and weeded some of the most historic sites in the town of Essex. His last official job ended at the town landfill. He was known for his sense of humor, honesty and hard work.

Raymond leaves his wife, Dorothy; four daughters, Donna Stearns (Ariz.), Barbara Fountain (Colo.), Joyce Carson (Colo. ), Nancy Ahrent (N.Y.); and two sons, Raymond (N.Y.) and Michael (Ga.).

He is preceded in death by two sons, David and George.

He was grandfather to 17 and great-grandfather to 12 children and was affectionately known as Poppy. His birth family was composed of a brother, Neil; and four sisters, Delora, Marguerite, Jane and Gertrude.

He will be sorely missed by those who had the honor to know him.

The family will be receiving friends from noon until 5 p.m. Sunday at the family residence at 3 Ross weigh in Essex, NY. Services will be private and held at the convienence of the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to W.M. Marvins Sons funeral home in Elizabethtown.
