JACKSONVILLE, FL - Mr. George S. Benchskey, 90, formerly of Plattsburgh, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, in Jacksonville. He was born in New York City on July 8, 1923.
George had worked as a union laborer. He was active in the Boy Scouts and served as Scout Master and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. George was instrumental in organizing District 3 Fire Department. He was predeceased by his wife Gertrude Benchskey.
George is survived by his daughters; Margaret Benchskey and Barbara Stebbins both of Plattsburgh; two sons, George Benchskey Jr. and James Benchskey, both of Florida; his grandchildren, John Light Jr., Samuel Light, Glenda Marie Light, Anita Butler, Christina Dyess; several great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Benchskey and a sister, Margaret Gregg; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, N.Y. A Knights of Columbus Service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
