PORT HENRY — On Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, we said our final farewells to Bernard C. Austin Sr., most recently residing at the Neighborhood House in Keene Valley.
Bernie was born in the farmhouse at the Essex Farms on Oct. 13, 1928. He grew up in the Westport area, where he learned to love the outdoors, hunting, trapping, fishing, hiking, etc.
He was proud to be a Scout Master in Dannemora, where he lived and worked at the Clinton Correctional facility for many years. He raised his first family there; wife, Barbara Simpson and three children, Bernard Jr., Bruce and Betty Sue.
After retiring from Clinton, he found himself in Vermont, working for Corrections there. In addition to having a second career; he and his second wife, (Barbara Jenks Potter), cared for many foster children.
Bernie is predeceased by his second wife; his parents; and all his siblings except one, Carl Austin of Connecticut.
He is survived by his three children, Bernard Jr. (BJ), Bruce and Betty Sue; four step children, Terry Potter, Barbara Jean Potter Deiss, George Potter and Tracy (Skip) Potter and Kevin Wood. He is also survived by many grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to attend a memorial service with reception following at the Westport Bible Church, 24 Youngs Road, Westport, NY 12993, at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8.
