Press-Republican

---- — SCHROON LAKE — It is with great sorrow that the family of Mary Jane Whitty announces her passing. She died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at her home, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mary Jane was born Dec. 22, 1937, in Glens Falls, N.Y. to the late G. Richard and Anna Page Welch. They moved back to Schroon Lake when she was a young girl. Mary Jane graduated from Schroon Lake Central School in 1957 and then graduated from Austin School of Beauty in 1958. Not loving cosmetology, she went to work for Albany Paint and Paper. She loved living in Albany and gained a lifelong friend in Anne Fagan, who died in the late 1990's.

When Mary Jane met and married Donald it took him a while to persuade her to move back to the Adirondacks. They married on July 10, 1959, and had just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Mary Jane worked for the Severance Cemetery Association for many years and also the Mousaw family of Schroon Lake. Mary Jane loved to travel. She went by train to California with her best friend Sandy Diabo and then to Alaska by car with Donald.

She loved to bake, read magazines, shop, the Yankees and partake in a game of chance or two. Sandy and Mary Jane loved to snowshoe and cross country ski together. Sandy died Dec. 24, 2004.

On Sept. 26, 2011, her world was turned upside down after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She was very fortunate to have Dr. Jason Heckman work his magic along with Dr, Mark Hoffman and Dr. Joseph Schwerman. Giving her almost two more years with her family. We would like to thank them all, along with the staffs at St. Peter's Hospital and the Cancer Center at Glens Falls Hospital. Also, thank you to High Peaks Hospice and nurses, Heather and Sue.

Mary Jane is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donald; her daughter Roxane and husband Gary Egan (who she loved as a son); her sister Joan Jenks and a special niece Arlene "Punkie" Whitty, all of Schroon Lake. She loved her four legged son Sidney more than anyone because he didn't talk back to her! She is also survived by brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Raymond (Joan) Whitty, Robert (Sandy) Whitty, Flora Jane and Patricia Whitty. She also has numerous cousins; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-nephew. She also had the best neighbors in the Beck and Fisher families.

At Mary Jane's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. The family has asked that you join them at an informal gathering from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Schroon Lake Fire House on Cedar Hill Drive .

It was her wish that all memorial donations be sent to the Severance Cemetery Association, PO Box 64, Severance, NY 12872, or High Peaks Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 192, Port Henry, NY 12974.
