OLMSTEADVILLE — A mother and son were charged with unlawfully growing cannabis.

On April 24, State Police went to 1335 Route 29 in Olmsteadville after the Essex County Office for the Aging requested a welfare check on Sharon M. Blackburn, 59, State Police said.

Troopers discovered 82 marijuana plants growing in the basement of the residence, police said.

Blackburn was charged with unlawfully growing cannabis, a misdemeanor under state Public Health Law.

She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Minerva Town Court.

Her son, Daniel T. Blackburn, 35, was also arrested and charged with unlawfully growing cannabis as well as first-degree criminal contempt, a felony, because he violated a stay-away order of protection that prohibits him from having contact with his mother, police said.

Mr. Blackburn was arraigned in Schroon Town Court and released on $5,000 cash bail.

He will appear in Minerva Town Court at a later date.
