BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — A Westport man was arrested Nov. 26 as a fugitive from justice in Vermont to answer to charges he incurred in Peru.

Trevor Smith, 32, was arrested on a warrant while he was working construction on a bridge near Interstate 91 in the Brattleboro, Vt. area, according to a news release from Vermont State Police.

On April 10, 2013 near the gas pumps at the Maplefields gas station on Bear Swamp Road in Peru, Smith drove his 2001 Ford F-250 into a 2010 Kia Soul that had a person inside, said New York State Police Troop B Public Information Officer Trooper Jennifer Fleishman.

Smith caused more than $2,000 in damage to the Kia, Fleishman said.

He was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a felony, Fleishman said.

The evening of the incident, Smith was arraigned in Peru Town Court and was sent to the Clinton County Jail in lieu of $2,000 cash or $4,000 bond.

After his arrest in Vermont on Nov. 26, Smith was taken to the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vt., Vermont State Police said in the release.

His bail was set at $10,000.

Smith appeared in Windham Superior Criminal Court the next day, Vermont State Police said.

No further information was available Wednesday.
