PLATTSBURGH — Police say a teen who had been "huffing" was injured after passing out behind the wheel on Thursday night.

A woman called State Police at about 9:25 p.m. to report two young men who she believed were using drugs in a car parked at Northern Cakes Redemption Center at 1290 Military Turnpike in Plattsburgh, Troop B Public Information Office Trooper Jennifer Fleishman said in a media release.

Troopers were on their way when the woman called back to say the car had left and was heading south on the Turnpike.

To assist police in finding the 2004 Jeep Cherokee, the witness followed and saw it cross onto the east shoulder, drive onto several lawns and hit a mailbox, the release said.

"The vehicle then swerved back across both lanes and eventually struck a tree on the west side of Military Turnpike," Fleishman said.

She said Micah J. Dromgoole, 17, of Peru was behind the wheel and had blacked out.

He was taken to CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh with chest injuries.

Police said the passenger in the Jeep, James R. Garrow Jr., 16, also of Peru, told officers he had grabbed the steering wheel, trying to keep the vehicle under control.

He was not hurt in the crash.

Police found a can of Ultra-Duster, a compressed-gas duster, in the car along with a small amount of marijuana.

Dromgoole was released from the hospital then arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and illegal sale and use of toxic vapors, a misdemeanor under New York State Public Health Law.

He was also ticketed for third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, failure to keep right, failure to maintain lane, moving from lane unsafely, reckless driving and failure to obey a traffic control device.

He is scheduled to appear in Schuyler Falls Town Court at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 17.
