LAKE PLACID — Maryjane Lawrence has been added to the sales team at the Conference Center in Lake Placid.

The sales strategy for the Conference Center is conducted cooperatively by the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau and the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA). The strategy includes attracting a combination of regional day business and multi-day, town-wide conferences, which are typically booked years in advance. The sales team coordinates hotel bids and proposals, assists groups and attendees in inventing custom programs for meetings and activities, develops comprehensive itineraries and spousal programs and offers centralized accounting and a convenient online reservations system.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Maryjane to the Conference Center team,” said James McKenna, president of the LPCVB. “Her experience and perspective will provide balanced leadership as we ramp up our presence in the conference marketplace.”

Ted Blazer , CEO of ORDA, the organization that manages the building, said that in addition to large-scale trade show and convention space they have in the 1932 and 1980 rinks, the Conference Center adds a new dimension to the experience Lake Placid offers to the conference market.

“We’re confident that we have a great sales team in place to fill our state-of-the-art, flexible meeting space,” he said.

Lawrence said that as a marketing professional in the area’s hospitality industry, she know well how the meetings market can ideally complement to the existing leisure travel business.

“I look forward to working with the conference center team and the community to bring meetings and conferences to Lake Placid during the times of year it will be most beneficial to businesses,” she said.

Homebuyer workshop

WEST CHAZY — An Earthwood Open House, part of the National Tour of Green Homes, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Earthwood Building School, 366 Murtagh Hill Road (off Military Turnpike), West Chazy.

Series returns

Member night

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Elizabethtown Community Hospital Auxiliary is hosting a new-member night on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the hospital boardroom. Anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome to attend.

The auxiliary participates in fundraising efforts throughout the year, with all proceeds supporting the hospital. The group donates clothing and snacks to those who need emergency-room care, offers care packages to chemotherapy patients and gives gifts and flowers to patients in the hospital during the holidays. It also provides scholarship funding and purchases equipment for the hospital’s various departments.

Accreditation received

LAKE PLACID — Debbie Strack, a family child care business owner in Lake Placid, has been awarded a National Accreditation from the National Association for Family Child Care (NAFCC).

“I decided to pursue accreditation because of my desire to offer the highest quality child care and be the best provider that I can be for the children entrusted in my care,” Strack said.

Strack has been providing care in her home for 25 years. She serves children ages six weeks through 5 years old from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

NAFCC offers accreditation to providers across the country, aiding them in raising their standards of quality care and gaining them the respect and recognition they deserve for their commitment to quality and children. The accreditation was made possible for Strack through a grant from the New York State Educational Incentive Program.

Strack serves as an Executive Committee member for the board of NAFCC, is membership secretary for the Family Child Care Association of New York State and serves as a board member for the Champlain Valley Chapter of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Health workshops

MORRISONVILLE — A free, six session workshop called Living Healthy is being offered by Eastern Adirondack Health Care Network and Northern Adirondack Medical Home.

The sessions are designed to help people with  ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, heart disease or asthma. Participants will learn self-management skills and set goals to improve their health and life.

They will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 2 to Nov. 6. Registration is available through Oct. 8. Sessions one or two must be attended to complete weeks three to six.

The workshops will be held at the Arthur LeFevre Apartments, 173 Rand Hill Rd., Morrisonville, in the community room.

Nominations sought

PLATTSBURGH — From now through Oct. 22, nominations are being sought for someone who is making a difference in the community to be MVP Health Care’s Ultimate Game Changer.

The contest invites kids age 13 and over and adults in New York and Vermont to nominate someone they feel is making a significant contribution.

“MVP is committed to helping people improve their health, their lives and our communities. Website unveiled

PLATTSBURGH — The North Country Chamber of Commerce

has announced the launch of its new website,, the official website for Plattsburgh International Airport. The bilingual site features a new look and navigation, as well as richer content.

“The upgrades to will combine to deliver a richer user experience ultimately fulfilling more of the traveler’s planning needs,”  said Chris Kreig, airport manager.

Visitors to the site can expect to find the most up-to-date information on airlines, destinations, parking, travel tips and TSA. In addition, Canadian travelers, who comprise 85 percent of the airport’s passengers, can access information on border wait times, web cams and exchange rates.

“Our bi-lingual airport website continues to be our main tool for attracting and serving passengers, and it has been incredibly successful,” said Garry Douglas

, chamber president. “For example, Allegiant receives more connections to its website from ours than from any other airport website. And we also use it to continually build our subscription base for a monthly bi-lingual airport newsletter, now reaching more than 20,000 households, most of them north of the border. And it’s a primary portal for economic development and other queries about the airport as well.”

BPW awards

PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women’s Club will celebrate National Business Women’s Week during the third week in October and is seeking nominations for Business Woman of the Year and Employer of the Year.

Nominees for the Woman of the Year should meet the following criteria:

She must have been employed for a minimum of five years and must exhibit the highest degree of integrity in her daily life and be highly respected in her community. She should exhibit creativity in the implementation of her job and have an active involvement in professional organizations in her field. The Woman of the Year should be someone who serves as a model to all working women and who exemplifies the contributions which all women are capable of making to society.

The following criteria are suggested as qualifications for Employer of the Year:

The business provides outstanding opportunities for upward mobility and additional training for female employees, has established a job-evaluation system that creates salary levels that provide equal pay for equal work, allows for salaries based on comparable worth, provides opportunities for development of new female talent, exhibits sensitivity to the needs of female employees, provides support for dependent care, and has established liberal parental-leave policies and/or flexible leave policies for employees.

Nominations should explain in 300 words or less the reason for the nomination based on one or more of the above criteria. Wine tour

PLATTSBURGH — On Sept. 19, the inauguration of the Champlain Valley International Wine Trail took place at Snow Farm Vineyard in Vermont. It is here that representatives and wine makers from New York, Vermont and Quebec gathered to celebrate the international trail, the first of its kind in the world. Spearheaded by the Lake Champlain Basin Program, the trail connects seven wineries on the Adirondack Coast, seven wineries throughout Middlebury, Vt., and 18 in Dunham, Quebec.

“The Champlain Valley International Wine Trail is a great opportunity to help us promote Adirondack Coast wineries to a broader audience and achieve greater success,” said Michele Powers, director of the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.

This new approach to wine tasting allows visitors the opportunity to learn about and taste wines of many different varieties and styles crafted from vineyards along the Champlain Valley while following a marked trail. The trail travels roughly 140 miles and offers something for both novices and aficionados. Travelers can stop for detours like shopping, sight-seeing, recreation and beach going.
