SARANAC LAKE — Adirondack Health has recruited a highly experienced mental-health professional to provide outpatient services at its health centers in Lake Placid and Tupper Lake.
Terry Surma Hilger is a psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner with more than 14 years of experience providing professional, empathetic counseling in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. She relocated to Northern New York about a year and a half ago from Arizona where she treated patients in a variety of clinical settings.
Her approach to treatment involves an active partnership with primary-care physicians to provide patients with the information and support they need to improve their mental and physical health. She believes a proactive approach through early detection, education and collaboration with medical staff leads to individualized, patient-centered care.
The services she will provide include psychiatric evaluation and treatment of patients age 14 and older. She will be accepting referrals from primary-care providers or other medical specialties and some self referrals.

Surma Hilger is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She obtained her Master of Science Degree in Nursing/Community Mental Health from Arizona State University. She received clinical training in numerous psychiatric settings in Phoenix, Ariz.

New CT scanner
ELIZABETHTOWN — Elizabethtown Community Hospital has installed a new CT scanner to enhance the level of service it offers. The 64-slice Philips Ingenuity CT scanner, installed in early November, provides more detailed images quickly with less radiation exposure for patients.
CT, or computed tomography, combines X-rays and computers to produce detailed, cross-sectional images of internal structures of the body, helping physicians diagnose disease and assess traumatic injury. ECH often uses CT scanning for patients who visit the Emergency Department to diagnose stroke and assess traumatic injury.
When people in the area are victims of car accidents, serious injury or stroke, they are brought to ECH. During these life-threatening situations, ECH has a very specific role: to triage, treat and transport to a facility offering specialized care. It stabilizes patients so that they can survive the trip to the stroke center, surgical facility or trauma center. CT is an important part of that process, providing important information to the Emergency Department.
It is critical that staff assess patients quickly, provide initial treatment and ensure that the patient is sent to the appropriate specialist. Trauma injuries include anything that can produce significant internal damage to the body — car accident, major fall or head injury. CT scans are also used to identify and monitor a number of patient illnesses.
According to Rob DeMuro, medical director at ECH, the new CT unit uses 40 to 80 percent less radiation, a feature that also supports the efforts of ECH to decrease the amount of patient exposure to radiation through CT scans.
“Physicians are becoming increasingly concerned about the risk of radiation overexposure and are carefully considering benefits and risks as they request CT scans,” DeMuro said. “It’s important to ensure that the CT scan is as safe as possible. This CT unit is one of the most technologically advanced on the market.”
DANNEMORA — Steve Dolgin, president of Dannemora Ford, recently was the recipient of the 25-year award given by Ford Motor Co. and Ford Motor Credit Co. This award is only given to dealerships that have achieved and maintained an outstanding working business relationship throughout the years with them.

SARANAC LAKE — The Lake Placid CVB/Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism is congratulating Gauthier’s Saranac Lake Inn and Hohmeyer’s Lake Clear Lodge for achieving Audubon International Platinum 5 Leaf Status, the highest Eco Lodging rating in North America.
This award is reserved only for properties that have met stringent guidelines in energy conservation, natural-resource preservation, guest education and outreach. The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort in Lake Placid attained Platinum 5 Leaf certification in 2009, the first hotel in the United States to receive this status.
“With only six total properties nationwide attaining this lofty designation, it is truly remarkable three are located within 15 miles of each other,” said Fredrik Realbuto, Green Lodging program director, Audubon International. “We believe these three facilities will act as catalysts and examples to be replicated throughout the region, the state and the country.”

Mental health programs
PLATTSBURGH — A Brown Bag Series is being offered for its 13th season including free mental-health programs for interested community members, professionals, consumers and family members.
It is co-sponsored by Behavioral Health Services North (BHSN) and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): Champlain Valley.
On Thursday, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., a program titled Disability Accessible Technology will be presented with panelists Chris Mayette, assistant manager, Verizon Wireless, and Karin Pataky, systems advocate, NCCI, at the Plattsburgh Public Library at 19 Oak St., Second Floor Meeting Room.
Participants may attend one, some or all in the series and are encouraged to bring a lunch. Resource materials will be provided.

PLATTSBURGH — Stewart’s Shops will once again team up with their customers and media partners for the Holiday Match program. Last year, Stewart’s matched the customers’ record donation of $700,000 for a total of $1.4 million. Since 1986, the Holiday Match program has donated more than $16 million to local children’s organizations.
From Thanksgiving Day through Christmas, Stewart’s will match individual donations made to the program in all 324 Stewart’s Shops.
“Many children’s organizations have lost some of their public funding and are now, more than ever, counting on the private sector to help them continue their good work. Holiday Match gives people the opportunity to make a donation, have it matched by Stewart’s and given back to children’s organizations in their communities,” said Stewart’s Foundation President Susan Dake.
“Last year we were able to help over 1,400 organizations with Holiday Match and, in these difficult times, we anticipate the number of applications to increase again this year. All the money donated goes to charity, there are no administrative costs.”
The goal of Holiday Match is to encourage individual giving and broaden the base of support for local charities. All donations are tax-deductible. Stewart’s accepts funds from groups or businesses, but only matches individual donations. Local children’s organizations can pick up an application throughout the holidays at any Stewart’s Shop or online at stewartsshops.com.
The deadline for submission is Jan. 31, 2013. All groups applying must be locally based, benefit children under 18 and be a qualified, charitable 501c3 organization. A brochure listing all the organizations in their 30-county area that received funds last season will also be available in all Stewart’s Shops.
PLATTSBURGH — Fresh on the heels of its in-store food drive, which donated nearly 12,000 food items to local food-rescue organizations, Kinney Drugs is kicking off the holiday season by hosting two separate gift-giving programs in all of its drug store locations to benefit less fortunate children and seniors.
From now through Dec. 14, Kinney Drugs is collecting new, unwrapped toys for children who may not otherwise receive gifts this year. During the Holiday Toy Drive, toys collected at each store will be distributed to local children by a charitable organization within the store’s own community.
Kinney Drugs will also help brighten the holidays for seniors through its Be a Santa for a Senior program. Each store is partnering with a local senior care center to develop individual gift suggestions for senior residents. Customers can review the suggestions and purchase gifts for seniors who may not be able to celebrate the holidays with loved ones.
“Be a Santa for a Senior is a way for us to share holiday cheer with seniors who have made such important contributions to our communities throughout the years,” said Jim Spencer, COO of Kinney Drugs Store Division. “We collected several thousand gifts during last year’s campaign, and we are excited to top that this year.”
“We believe that we are only as strong as our community,” said Spencer. “We strive to make our community a better place to live and these gift-giving programs put that into action.”
Anyone interested in participating in the programs can donate gifts at their local Kinney Drugs store through mid-December. Each store will display the name of the local partnering organization that will receive the donated gifts.
