Grand opening

WILLSBORO — Willsboro Outdoor World’s grand opening will be May 4. The business is located on the corner of Route 22 and Bay Lane in Willsboro. The location was once Champlain Angler Sports, owned and operated by Jim and Tina Hotaling for many years.

The grand opening will be from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. with special events from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Raffles, prizes, food and fun will be offered throughout the afternoon. The recent upward spiral of fisherman attracted to Lake Champlain and its tributaries for lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon demands a premier destination point for fishing and outdoor supplies.

Kristen Hotaling, store owner and sole proprietor, has fished Lake Champlain all her life and is a second-generation entrepreneur. Her father has owned and operated Trolling Tina Charters on Lake Champlain for more than 20 years.

“I know the area and I know fishing, so this is my passion and I plan to run this business for the fishermen and outdoorsmen who have my same passion,” Hotaling said.

With her business degree from Plattsburgh State, Hotaling knows the opportunity exists as she has watched the return of fishermen to Lake Champlain after the decrease in fish size and look due to the lamprey epidemic. With lamprey control programs set up both in New York and Vermont, the fish size has increased and the lamprey marks have diminished bringing the fishermen back.

Willsboro Outdoor World will be a premier live-bait and tackle shop in this part of the Lake Champlain Valley region and will offer supplies and resources for experienced or novice fisherman, hunters, hikers and campers.

Rating achieved

PLATTSBURGH — KeyBank has earned its eighth “Outstanding” rating from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency for exceeding the terms of the Community Reinvestment Act exam. Key is the only U.S. national bank among the 25 largest to be rated Outstanding by the OCC for eight consecutive review periods, since the act’s passage in 1977.

“We’re honored to have earned an Outstanding rating from the OCC for the eighth consecutive time,” said Beth Mooney, KeyCorp chairman and chief executive officer. “We’re especially proud to have provided loans, investments and services throughout the exam period, which was the height of the financial crisis. Being a responsible bank during difficult times matters to the communities that we serve.”

The Community Reinvestment Act requires banks to meet the credit needs of low- and moderate-income communities. The exam rates institutions in three categories: lending, investment and services. Included in the assessment are bank practices such as mortgage lending, small-business lending, community-development lending, investments in community-development organizations and projects, bank services to communities, and employee community involvement.

For the overall rating and the three subcategories, banks are assigned one of four ratings: “Outstanding,” “Satisfactory,” “Need to Improve” or “Substantial Noncompliance.” Exams are completed every three to four years, and Key’s recent exam period covered July 1, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2011.

KeyBank’s focus on this issue is part of its overall commitment to corporate responsibility, which includes the bank’s philanthropy, sustainability, volunteerism and diversity efforts. These include Neighbors Make the Difference Day, KeyBank’s annual company-wide day of volunteerism in local neighborhoods. During the exam period, KeyBank employees volunteered 100,400 hours, or $2.8 million in salary equivalency, on nearly 3,000 projects nationwide.

It also includes Key’s commitment to supplier diversity. KeyBank spent 15 percent of its overall vendor budget with minority-, women-, and veteran-owned businesses each of the past three years, compared to the average of eight percent spent by publicly traded corporations.

Funds raised

PLATTSBURGH — Price Chopper Supermarkets has completed another successful Shamrock fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), raising $292,937 in donations from its customers, teammates and trade partners.

“We remain deeply committed to working with MDA to raise awareness of the progress being made to cure neuromuscular diseases and to raise funds that fuel that progress,” said Mona Golub, vice president of public relations and consumer and marketing services. “The multi-faceted partnership that we’ve built with MDA over the last 30 years integrates into many parts of our business and into the lives of our teammates.”

Price Chopper stores throughout the six-state footprint participate in friendly competition to be named “top fundraising store” or store with the “best display of shamrock pin-ups.”

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. Neil Golub, Price Chopper’s executive chairman of the board, has served as National MDA vice president since 1984.

Open house

WEST CHAZY — An open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Earthwood Building School, 366 Murtagh Hill Road (off the Military Turnpike), West Chazy.

Free one-hour tours include cordwood masonry, earth-sheltered housing, solar power, the masonry stove, a bicycle-powered water system, straw bale and cob buildings, an astronomically attuned megalithic stone circle and more.
